SEO for lawyers · Melbourne

SEO for lawyers that puts your firm in front of the client searching this week.

People with a legal problem search the practice area and their suburb, read a little, and call the firm that looks credible. Law firm SEO is the work of being that firm, without a line of copy the solicitors' conduct rules wouldn't allow.

Whale Digital Consulting is a Melbourne web design and local SEO studio. For law firms and sole practitioners that means a page for each practice area, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent reviews and listings, and copy written to the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules. Scoped and quoted per firm, with no lock-in.

What does SEO for lawyers involve?

Law firm SEO is getting your firm found when someone near you searches for help with a specific legal problem: on the map, in the results and in AI answers. For a small or mid-sized firm, it comes down to five jobs.

The jobWhat it coversWhy it matters for a firm
Practice area pagesOne page for each area you want work inPeople search the problem, like "family lawyer Frankston", not just "lawyer"
Google Business ProfileCategories, practice areas, hours, photos and a booking linkA near-me search on a phone usually shows the map before any website
Reviews and listingsThe same name, address and number everywhere, and a reply to every reviewMismatched details make Google less sure you're one firm
Trust signalsLawyer profiles, admission details and plain-English FAQsChoosing a lawyer is a high-trust decision, and people check before they call
Monthly reportCalls, consult bookings and the searches behind themMeasured in enquiries, not traffic
The story

Nobody browses for a lawyer. They search the problem and the suburb, read one or two pages, and call. Whoever answers the question clearly and looks credible usually gets the call.

The tool

Local SEO for your firm: practice area pages written the way clients search, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings, and copy checked against the conduct rules on advertising.

The payoff

The aim is enquiries for the work you want, from the areas you serve, without paying for every click.

What law firm SEO needs (and what just burns budget)

You need

A page for each practice area, a verified Google Business Profile, consistent directory listings and a site that loads fast on a phone.

You don't need

Hundreds of thin suburb pages, bought links, or a twelve-month lock-in.

You stay inside the rules

The conduct rules say a firm's advertising can't be false, misleading, deceptive or offensive, and only accredited solicitors can use the words "accredited specialist". We write to those rules and flag anything risky before it goes live.

We work on the few things that bring in consults, and tell you straight when something isn't worth the spend.

Practice area pages clients search for

Family law

People arrive stressed and short on time. A calm page that explains the first steps, what a first meeting covers and how to book does more than a list of services.

Wills and estates

Often searched by adult children sorting a parent's affairs. Plain answers about probate, timing and what to bring make the first call easier.

Conveyancing

A price-sensitive search with a deadline attached. Say what's included, when you need to be engaged, and how fees are worked out.

Criminal law

Urgent, and often after hours. The page needs a number that taps to call and a clear line on what happens next, without overstating any outcome.

Personal injury

Personal injury advertising has had its own rules in some states, so a page aimed beyond Victoria needs checking against each state's current law.

Employment law

Searched by employees and employers alike. Say which side you act for, and answer the deadline questions people search first.

We're based in Bayside and work with firms and sole practitioners across Melbourne.

Advertising rules for lawyers: what SEO copy can't say

No false or misleading claims

Rule 36.1 of the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules says a solicitor or principal must make sure the firm's advertising isn't false, misleading or deceptive, offensive, or prohibited by law. On a web page that means no promised outcomes, no made-up results and no "number one" claim you can't back up. Source: Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner: rules and compliance.

"Accredited specialist" is a protected phrase

Rule 36.2 bars a false impression of specialist expertise, and bars the words "accredited specialist" unless the solicitor is accredited by the relevant professional association. Unless that's true for a named lawyer, the copy says "we practise in family law" and leaves "specialist" out. Source: Law Society of NSW: advertising legal services.

You sign off, because it's your advertising

Rule 36.1 puts the duty on the solicitor or the principal of the practice. We draft in plain English, and a lawyer at your firm reads it before anything goes live.

Local SEO Melbourne

When someone nearby searches for what you do, you want to be the name they see first — in the map, in the results, in the AI answer. That's local SEO Melbourne — the SEO most small businesses actually need, done properly.

Content marketing Melbourne

Content marketing usually means a separate agency, a separate retainer, content that lives on someone else's blog. Ours publishes straight to your own site — 2–4 new pieces a month that feed the SEO and AI-visibility work you're already paying for, not a second thing to manage.

Questions we get asked

It can, when the work matches how clients search: a page for each practice area, a strong Google Business Profile and consistent listings. It's slower than Google Ads and nobody controls Google, so judge it on enquiries over months, not on a promised ranking.

The kind you can check. Ask for reporting in calls and consult bookings, not traffic. Ask who reads the copy before it goes live. And ask what happens if you want to leave. Be wary of anyone promising you the top spot.

No. AI answers still point to pages that already exist, and Google's AI Overviews show the links they drew from. A page that answers what clients ask, in plain English, is useful in both places.

It depends on how many practice areas you want to be found for and how crowded your area is, so we scope it per firm. Get a proposal for a straight number.

We draft it in plain English, and a lawyer at your firm checks it before it goes live. The conduct rules put that duty on the solicitor or principal, so nothing is published without your sign-off.

Yes. If your site is slow or hard to enquire from, SEO has less to work with. See law firm web design.

No. SEO is billed month to month. We report every month in plain English, and you can leave with notice when it stops earning its keep.
