AI website builder or a Melbourne web design agency? An honest comparison
A builder can have you live before lunch. An agency costs thousands. Here's when each one is the right answer — including the times you shouldn't hire anybody.
An AI website builder can have you live before lunch. That part is real, and it isn't worth arguing about.
The argument is about month six.
What the AI builders are genuinely good at
Plenty of Melbourne businesses should use one. If what you need is a tidy page that says who you are, where you are and how to reach you, a builder does that well and cheaply.
- Speed — a working page today, not a six-week project.
- Low entry cost — a monthly subscription instead of a lump sum.
- You keep the keys — change your hours or your prices at 11pm without emailing anybody.
If that's the whole job, go build one. Paying thousands to replace a page you could have made yourself is one of the easier ways for a small business to waste money.
Where the cost actually shows up
A builder gets you a website. What it doesn't get you is a decision about what the website is for.
- Everyone picks the same handful of templates. The shop down the road is on one too, and nothing on the page tells a customer why they should choose you.
- The subscription never stops. Work out what yours costs over five or six years, then remember you still don't own the site at the end of it.
- Leaving is hard. Most builders let you export your words, not your website. You're renting.
- Nobody is watching it. A booking form that quietly stops sending emails is an enquiry you never knew you lost.
What you're actually buying from an agency
Not pixels. Decisions.
Which page a customer lands on. What the first line says. Whether the phone number taps to call on a phone. What happens to an enquiry at 9pm on a Sunday. Those are judgement calls, and a template can't make them for you.
You're also buying somebody who has to pick up the phone when it breaks. That's worth more than it sounds at the point it matters.
Three times you shouldn't hire an agency
- You don't know what the site is for yet. Work that out on paper first. It costs nothing and it changes the brief completely.
- Your business changes weekly. A menu that moves every few days needs something you edit yourself, not a ticket to a studio.
- Nobody will give you a number before you sign. That's already the answer.
The question that settles it
Ask what a single new customer is worth to you over a year.
For a café that might be a few hundred dollars. For a plumber or a law firm it can run to thousands. Put that number next to the build cost. If two extra jobs pay for the site, the decision stops being about websites and starts being about how many enquiries you're missing right now.
Run honestly, that maths points at a builder more often than agencies like to admit — and at an agency more often than the DIY forums do.
For what it's worth, we publish our prices for exactly this reason: three fixed packages at A$499, A$1,699 and A$4,800, quoted before anything starts, with the domain, site and code in your name and no lock-in. The detail sits on affordable web design in Melbourne and small business web design. If a builder is the better answer for your situation, we'd rather tell you that than sell you a build.
Work out what one customer is worth. Everything else follows from that number.
