How long does SEO take to work?
How long does SEO take to work? Google's own answer, the four things that change the wait, and what to check before rankings move.
Google's own SEO guide won't give you a single number. It says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months.
That spread is the honest answer to how long SEO takes to work. Anyone who gives you a firm date is guessing.
How long does SEO take to work, according to Google?
Google's SEO Starter Guide says every change you make takes some time to be reflected on Google's end, and advises waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. It also warns that not every change will make a noticeable difference, and suggests trying another change if you're not happy with the results.
Google's page on hiring an SEO tells you to ask any SEO what results they expect and in what timeframe. If they guarantee first place in search results, it says to find someone else.
Google also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Why two businesses get different answers
A five-year-old plumbing site with plenty of reviews chasing "blocked drain Bentleigh" is a different job from a brand-new clinic chasing "physio Melbourne", even when the work is the same. Four things decide the gap.
Where you're starting from
A brand-new site has to be found before it can rank. Google's guide says to check whether it has already found your content before you do anything else. A site whose pages already appear in Search has less ground to make up.
How contested your searches are
"Mobile mechanic Mordialloc" is a different fight from "mechanic Melbourne". A narrow search usually has fewer businesses competing for it, so it's a sensible place to start.
The state of your website
If your site is slow, thin or hard to use on a phone, SEO is pushing against a closed door. Sometimes the quickest SEO win is fixing the site first, which is why small business web design and SEO belong in the same conversation.
Whether you keep going
Google's advice is to keep iterating: if a change doesn't make a difference, try another and see. That only works if someone is still checking the numbers and adjusting.
What to check before rankings move
Refreshing your rankings every morning won't tell you much. Search Console, Google's free tool for site owners, shows you more:
- Impressions, meaning how many times your site appeared in search results, even where nobody clicked.
- The queries that show your site. A growing list means Google is matching you to more searches.
- Which pages get found, so you know which pieces of work are being picked up.
If you have a Google Business Profile, check its performance insights too. Give any change a few weeks before you judge it, as Google suggests, and if nothing has moved after that, look at the approach.
When SEO is the wrong answer right now
If you need customers this month, SEO won't save you. It's a slow build, and pretending otherwise costs people money.
Google Ads can put you in front of searchers much sooner: Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day. The ads stop when you stop paying, so running Google Ads in Melbourne alongside SEO is one way to cover the wait.
Questions we get asked
How long does SEO take to work?
Google doesn't give a single number. Its SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change. Where you land depends on your starting point, your competition and the state of your website.
Why does SEO take so long?
Google says every change takes some time to be reflected on its end. Your pages are also being weighed against businesses that already rank, which can take more than one round of changes.
Can SEO work in a few weeks?
Some changes can, since Google says some take effect in a few hours. Fixing a page Google couldn't read, or a Business Profile missing its details, removes a problem rather than out-competing anyone.
How do I know my SEO is working before rankings move?
Watch impressions and the list of queries that show your site in Google Search Console, plus your Business Profile's performance insights. Give each change a few weeks, as Google suggests, before you judge it.
Is SEO or Google Ads better if I need customers now?
Google Ads. Google says most ads are reviewed within one business day, and they keep running while you pay. SEO visits don't cost you per click, but they take longer to arrive, so running both while SEO builds is one way to cover the gap.
