What is AEO, and why should Melbourne businesses care now?

Answer engine optimisation explained for Melbourne small business — how to get named by ChatGPT and Google AI, and what to do first.

A customer asks ChatGPT “who's a good electrician near Brighton?” and gets three names. Either you're one of them, or you don't exist.

That's the whole problem AEO solves. So what is AEO? It stands for answer engine optimisation — the work of getting your business named when someone asks an AI for a recommendation instead of scrolling Google.

What is AEO in plain English?

Old habit: type “plumber Bayside” into Google, get ten blue links, pick one.

New habit: ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview or Siri a full question — “who can fix a burst pipe in Bayside today?” — and get one short answer with two or three businesses named in it.

AEO is how you become one of those named businesses. Not a link on page one. The answer itself.

How does an AI decide who to name?

AI assistants don't take ads and don't rank ten results. They pull from a handful of signals and commit to a short answer:

  • Your Google Business Profile — categories, hours, services, photos. Thin profile, no mention.
  • Reviews — what real customers say, and how many say it. AI reads these like a mate giving advice.
  • Your website's answers — pages that state clearly what you do, where, and for how much. Vague brochure copy gives an AI nothing to quote.
  • Structured data (schema) — code that labels your business info so machines read it without guessing.
  • Being in the right indexes — ChatGPT search runs on Bing. If your site isn't indexed there, you're invisible to it no matter how good you are.

Notice something? None of that is exotic. It's local SEO fundamentals, tightened up for machines that quote instead of rank.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO — do you need all three?

You'll see all three terms thrown around, and they overlap more than the jargon suggests.

SEO gets you ranked in search results. AEO gets you named in AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is another label for much the same work as AEO — different acronym, same goal.

Here's the practical bit: they're not three separate bills. Done properly, one set of work feeds all three — we've broken down how the three fit together if you want the full picture.

Why “now” and not next year?

Two reasons, and neither is hype.

Your customers are already there. Searches for “what is AEO” in Australia have more than quadrupled in the past year. That's business owners noticing enquiries arriving that started with “ChatGPT recommended you”.

Your competitors mostly aren't. Rankings on Google took years for established players to lock in. AI answers are still forming — a small Melbourne business that sorts its signals out now can be the name an AI reaches for, while bigger competitors are still ignoring it. That window doesn't stay open.

Not a link on page one. The answer itself.

What should a Melbourne small business actually do?

In rough order of payoff:

  • Fill out your Google Business Profile completely. Every service, real photos, accurate hours. This is the single biggest input to both Maps and AI answers.
  • Collect reviews that mention what you do. “Great service” is nice. “Fixed our hot water in Cheltenham same day” is quotable — and AI quotes.
  • Put real answers on your site. A genuine FAQ — your prices, your suburbs, your turnaround — in plain sentences an AI can lift.
  • Get indexed beyond Google. Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools; that's what ChatGPT search reads.
  • Add schema markup. Invisible to visitors, load-bearing for machines.

You can do a fair chunk of this yourself. The catch is consistency — every profile, page and listing telling the same story — which is where most DIY attempts come apart.

What does AEO cost?

With us, it's not a separate product with its own invoice. AEO is built into our local SEO service from A$490/mo — same signals, same work, one bill.

One condition worth knowing: AI assistants quote websites that answer clearly. If your site is a slow one-pager, there's nothing to quote — that's a web design fix before it's an AEO one.

Questions we get asked

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimisation — the work of getting your business named in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Siri, rather than ranked as a link.

Is AEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. SEO earns you a ranking in search results; AEO earns you a mention in the answer itself. The underlying work — clear content, strong Google Business Profile, reviews, schema — feeds both.

Do small businesses really need AEO in 2026?

If your customers ask AI assistants for recommendations — and more do every month — then yes. The advantage is that most small-business competitors haven't started, so early movers are easier for an AI to find and name.

How long does AEO take to work?

Similar to local SEO: the groundwork lands in weeks, mentions build over months. Anyone promising you'll be ChatGPT's first pick by Friday is guessing.

Can I do AEO myself?

Some of it — Google Business Profile, reviews and a proper FAQ page are all DIY-able. Schema, indexing and keeping every listing consistent is where it usually pays to hand it over.
